Expected outcome
Ultimately we hope that the outcome of the Nordic Center of Excellence on Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration will be novel disease-modifying therapies. There is currently a great need for treatments that slow down the development of neurodegenerative disorders. In order to identify such new treatment strategies, it will be necessary to understand the molecular bases of the diseases in greater depth. This is an important milestone for our Network. In addition we hope to discover novel biomarkers that allow us to monitor disease progression in an objective fashion. They will facilitate the development of novel therapies as they can both provide insight into disease mechanisms and be used as objective measures of treatment effects.
Finally, we intend our Network to promote excellent training of young scientists and mold them into a future generation of Nordic research leaders in neurodegeneration. This process will naturally result in Nordic research groups interacting more than today. As a consequence we hope to see new Nordic research collaborations and synergies, to increase the visibility of Nordic research and to improve our chances of recruiting outstanding collaborators from abroad. The final long term outcome of these efforts will be a stronger and more competitive Nordic research environment in molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration.
